Shanghai Museum! (Video in Mandarin).

Posted by Wei fu on 25 May 2010

When I was a kid, I love to visit Shanghai museum to see dinosaur fossils. But I was very sad because the dinosaur is extinct now and I was wondering if it will be the same for human beings. So I started to learn biology and try to find a solution that life can live forever. In one of my biology class, I need to dissect an insect and I was afraid to do it, but after I overcome the fear and found out it's not that hard and scary as I thought. So I think biology system is not that complicated after you gain more knowledge and it's a very interesting science if you love to do it.

A cute child with leishmaniasis

A cute child with leishmaniasis

When I was a child my parent wanted me to become a medical doctor. Also in our school there were some students who had leishmaniasis in their hand or face. In that time I was thinking that being a medical doctor is only way to help them. It had a childhood dream job. Then in high school I found out there is no drug against lesihmaniasis and preparing vaccine is the best way. So I choose my carrier and studied microbiology. I tried to be involved in vaccine projects and work hard but there was no progress because leishmaniaisis is a poor people disease. It is a neglected disease which no one would like to invest money in projects. Still when I was travelling to endemic area I was suffering a lot by seeing cute children or beautiful ladies with a lesions or scars in their face and some of them suffer by leishmaniasis during their entire life. Now I am working on genetic control of leishmaniasis and trying to prepare set of markers which can help to distinguish more susceptible people from others at least inform them to leave endemic area. This is not the end of my story. Still I am working on it and I hope it will be happy ended by helping patients. Helping people is the main reason not only my but also most of scientists “bio begin”.

My bio and Politics

Posted by Hamideh Ranjbar on 24 Apr 2010

My biology began 3 months ago when I decided to change my field from physics to biology. I have been in Europe for 2.5 years and since I arrived I have been trying to get a PhD position in physics which was my original field but because of political situations (EU and UN resolutions about Iran) whenever I jointed to institutes or tried to get a position in universities I was told that Iranian are banded to study or work in the field of physics. I am not politician or interested in politics but I suffered a lot because of it. I always believe that science should be free of politics. I was quite ...
